MURRAY ST +3 (CBB Thursday: 2:30 ET)

Going against the public view here as I load this up and that never, ever bothers me in the least, quite the opposite actually. Vandy gettting the nod from bettors because of the conference they come out of. Sometimes that argument holds water and sometimes not. This Murray State club easily clears the eye ball test here with me when comparing the Racers with the Commodores. Murray State has prevailed in 30 games this year guys and despite the knocks on their less than stellar schedule I still liked what I saw when they handily knocked off a quality Morehead State club in the Ohio Valley conference tourney title game by a convincing 62-51 count. The stubborn fact is this Racers squad not only beat teams along the way this season, they beat them badly. Also, Murray State is one of only two teams leading their conferences in both scoring and scoring defense, the other team, you guessed it, the Kansas Jayhawks. I respect Vanderbilt but feel the value here is with the points and Murray State guys.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets

New Orleans Hornets at Denver Nuggets (-13, 214)

The road hasn’t been kind to the Hornets. Sure they polished off the Clippers at Staples Center, but is that really much of an accomplishment?

New Orleans was 0-7 and 3-4-1 against the spread in its last seven away dates before Monday’s win over the Clippers. The Hornets’ hosts averaged 108.9 points and shot better than 51 percent from the field during the stretch, according to the New Orleans Times Picayune.

The negative results on the defensive end could be a result of tired legs. New Orleans has been running with just eight warm bodies over the last few weeks.

“It’s a short-term situation that we’re in, ’’ GM and acting coach Jeff Bower said. “Quite frankly, the eight players that we have are better than anyone we could bring in. This gives them an opportunity to play extended minutes. It’s something we’re going to continue with for now."

Reserve forward James Posey is expected to rejoin his mates this week but he’s still trying to get over the flu. Meanwhile team MVP Chris Paul isn’t expected to return until the beginning of next week.

The Hornets’ road woes should continue again on Thursday against the Nuggets.

Pick: Denver

Orlando Magic at Miami Heat (+3, 187)

Rashard Lewis, a wing scorer and Orlando’s highest paid player, has totaled just 12 points and 10 rebounds in his last three games.

Is Lewis sacrificing his game for the good of his team or is he just playing like crap? Well that depends on who you ask.

"This is my 12th year in the league," Lewis told reporters earlier this week. "There's been times when I've got frustrated over shots and wanted to get the ball. But I wasn't on a good team.

“This time, I'm a veteran. All that matters is winning. I'm on a good a team, a playoff team, a team that's competing for a championship. Sometimes you've got to know how to play your role, and sometimes you've got to sacrifice."

His coach doesn’t share the same opinion.

"Rashard [is] just not playing well at all right now," Van Gundy told the Orlando Sentinel. "And it's not just the shooting. [He's] not rebounding the ball. He's just not playing with much energy.

"I have confidence he'll bounce back. But right now, he's just not playing well."

The Magic will need Lewis’ production in the playoffs against the Atlantas and Clevelands of the Eastern Conference but they can make do without him against the Miami Heat.

Pick: Orlando

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets

St. Louis Blues at New York Rangers (-140, 5.5)

After a paltry offensive performance on Tuesday, the Rangers shook up their scoring lines in Wednesday’s practice, splitting up Vinny Prospal and Marian Gaborik.

But team captain Chris Drury pointed out additional deficiencies after the game.

"It's immaturity. That's what it's been all year,” Drury said. “It's so obvious how we have to play and see how successful we can be with it, and it just again, it bites us in the ass. We're just not consistent with it.”

Not exactly a ton of confidence in the captain with 12 games left to play and the Rangers three points removed from the final playoff spot. But calling his squad out should spark a renewed effort in the team.

New York will continue its topsy-turvy ways and bounce back with a win over the Blues who have lost two straight.

Pick: Rangers

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes (+130, 6)

Who needs the best player in the NHL anyway? Washington doesn’t appear desperate for the return of Alex Ovechkin.

The Caps cruised to a 7-3 win over Florida on Tuesday in their first game since Ovechkin was suspended. When the league’s scoring leader was suspended in early December, Washington went 2-0 while outscoring its opponents 14-4, and the team is 7-2-0 overall without Ovechkin this season.

"It's nice that everyone contributes when he’s not in there," said Jason Chimera. "That's important down the stretch in case someone big like that goes out. It's nice to know we can score goals without him."

Scoring goals is what the Caps do best but it would be unwise to bet against a desperate home team like the Hurricanes who have been hot the past two and a half months. The last three in this series have gone over.

Pick: Over

Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders.com has Tennessee.

I give Steve Fisher and his Aztecs all of the credit in the world for beating both New Mexico and UNLV in Vegas to win the Mountain West Tournament. San Diego State is a very good ballclub that has won five in a row and 9 of their last 10. But things are going to be a little more difficult in this spot across the country in Rhode Island and against a team that is a little bit perturbed about that last embarassing effort against Kentucky.

I am not the biggest Tennessee fan because the Volunteers are not a great team but with that said they are still a quality top 20 or so squad that is way too cheap only laying around three points in this spot. When laying a ton I will fade the Vols with the best of them but in this spot I'm all abou tthe orange.

It's never easy to travel across the country like this for anybody no less a good but not great SDSU team that scored 68 points in literally five straight games last month. Now that is the stat of the century. If a team tried to score the exact same number of points like that they couldn't do it.

Anyway, my point is that the Aztecs are more of a grind it out type of a team that plays lower scoring games. Tennessee is sort of the antithesis of that as they like to run and bomb away from three all the while using Wayne Chism and Brian Williams down low to grab the boards and bang in the paint.

We can see the Vols, who are the superior team from still the superior conference play more at their pace here a lot closer to home with more than likely the majority of their fans in the building.

I think people have gotten a little too carried away with this San Diego State team and have forgotten a little about the potential upside of Tennessee making this thing a bit too cheap. Fisher's squad is good but a little overvalued and should lose this game in the end by about eight

Free pick: Tennessee
